Why sail Phuket

Phuket sits at the mouth of Phang Nga Bay, and the bay is the reason to come. Limestone karsts rise straight out of flat green water, hollowed into hongs — tidal lagoons you reach by dinghy through sea caves at low water. Sail north from the marinas and the islands come in tight clusters: short hops, calm water, an anchorage every few miles. The wind is usually light, the depths are forgiving, and longtail boats outnumber yachts. It suits crews who want to swim, explore by tender, and eat well rather than log distance. If you came to sail hard upwind for days, the Andaman in season is the wrong sea.

Phuket questions

Asked and answered.

What does it cost to charter a yacht in Phuket for a week?
A bareboat catamaran for a week typically runs into the low-to-mid four figures in EUR, with monohulls lower and larger or newer cats higher. Christmas and New Year are the dearest weeks. On top of the base, budget for fuel, final clean, a refundable deposit, national-park fees and food. Skippers add roughly EUR 150–200 per day. Crewed yachts are quoted individually — send dates on WhatsApp.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat in Phuket?
For bareboat you need a recognised sailing qualification (such as an ICC or RYA certificate) and some genuine sea miles, plus a sailing CV we can review. Requirements vary by boat, so confirm with us before booking. If you don't hold a licence or feel rusty in unfamiliar tidal waters, add a skipper — a local captain who knows the hongs and tides is well worth it the first time.
When is the best time to sail Phuket?
November to April, the north-east monsoon: dry weather, flat seas and light to moderate breeze. December to February is the steadiest and most reliable. March and April turn hot and hazy. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain, west-coast swell and gusts, and we don't recommend it for relaxed cruising — many boats stand down for the season.
Where do charters start from in Phuket?
Our fleet bases out of four east-coast marinas: Yacht Haven and Ao Po Grand Marina at the north, closest to Phang Nga Bay; and Royal Phuket Marina near town and the airport. Ao Po holds the largest share of boats and is the quickest jump-off for the Yao islands. Your exact pick-up marina depends on the boat, and we confirm it with you over WhatsApp before arrival.
Is Phuket good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes. The water is flat and warm, the winds are light, anchorages are close together, and there's a swim, a beach or a sea cave every few miles — easy days rather than long passages. Catamarans suit families best for the deck space and stability at anchor. Add a skipper if you'd rather relax than navigate the tides, and budget a day early to settle in before sailing.
Can I sail to Phi Phi or the Similans on a charter?
Koh Phi Phi is an easy reach from the bay — arrive early to beat the day-trip boats and you'll have the snorkelling bays to yourself. The Similan Islands lie further offshore to the west, a dive-season trip that needs settled weather, more fuel and more planning; they're not a casual add-on. Tell us your priorities and we'll suggest a route that fits your week and experience.
How do I get to the marinas from Phuket airport?
Phuket International (HKT) is the gateway. Yacht Haven and Ao Po on the north-east coast are roughly 30–40 minutes by road; Royal Phuket Marina near town is a little longer. Taxis and pre-booked transfers are straightforward. Most nationalities enter Thailand visa-free for short stays — check your own rules before flying. We'll send the meeting point and exact marina ahead of time on WhatsApp.
