Why sail the Dodecanese

This is the south-east corner of the Aegean, a string of islands hung along the Turkish coast from Patmos down to Rhodes. We've sailed it most summers and keep coming back for one reason: the islands sit close together, but each one is its own place. Symi is neoclassical houses stacked round a harbour. Nisyros has a live volcano you can walk into. Tilos is empty in the best way. You get short hops, deep history, and harbours where the taverna tables still spill onto the quay. It suits sailors who'd rather anchor off a fishing village than queue for a marina berth.

Dodecanese questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in the Dodecanese cost?
It depends on the boat, the size and the month. Older monohulls in May or October sit at the lower end; newer catamarans in August at the top. Budget separately for fuel (€100–250 a week), end cleaning, and harbour fees of roughly €25–60 a night in Greek ports — more in Turkey. For a firm quote on real dates and a named boat, message us on WhatsApp.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat here?
Yes. Greek rules require the skipper to hold an ICC or a recognised national sailing qualification, plus a second competent crew member named on the paperwork. Bring your sailing CV. If you don't hold a licence or want a quieter week, we can arrange a skipper on most of the bareboat fleet for a daily fee plus their food.
When is the best time to sail the Dodecanese?
May, June, September and early October. You get 15–25 knot winds, warm water and fewer boats in the harbours. July and August are reliable but bring the meltimi — a north-westerly that builds through the afternoon and can hold Force 5–6. It's a fine wind to sail, just plan a north-to-south route so it's behind you.
Should I start from Kos or Rhodes?
Both work, and we base boats at each. Kos sits further north, near Kalymnos, Leros and Lipsi; Rhodes is the southern gateway to Symi and the Turkish coast. The meltimi favours sailing north-to-south, so many crews fly into Kos and out of Rhodes. A one-way charter carries a drop fee — check return flights before you commit to the route.
Is the Dodecanese good for families and first-time charterers?
Yes. The islands sit close together, so days are short hops rather than long passages, and there's a swim stop or a harbour taverna at the end of most legs. May, June and September keep the wind manageable. Catamarans give families more space and shade. If no one aboard holds a licence, take a skipper — five crewed boats and skippered bareboats are available.
Can I sail across to the Turkish coast?
You can, and Datça and Bozburun are an easy leg from Rhodes or Symi. It does add clearance paperwork at both the Greek and Turkish ends, so tell us before you book — the boat's papers have to allow international crossing, and not every bareboat does. Carry passports for everyone aboard and budget extra for the higher Turkish harbour fees.
How do I book and ask questions?
WhatsApp is the simplest channel. Tell us your dates, crew size, whether you want bareboat or a skipper, and which base suits you, and we'll come back with available boats and a real price rather than a placeholder. The small crewed fleet books out first in peak months, so message early if you want a captain for July or August.
