Why sail here

The Côte d'Azur packs short hops and big contrast into one coastline. In a morning you can leave the white limestone of the Calanques near Marseille and be anchored off a pine-fringed cove by lunch. The water turns from deep blue offshore to pale turquoise over sand in the shallow bays. This is daysailing country: marinas sit close enough that you rarely need a long passage, which suits crews who want to swim, eat well ashore, and not spend the day on the helm. We've sailed this stretch enough to say it honestly — it's busy in high summer and the mistral can pin you in port, but the sailing between those days is some of the most rewarding in the Mediterranean.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter on the Côte d'Azur cost?
It depends heavily on boat type, size and season. A smaller monohull in spring or autumn sits at the low end; a large modern catamaran in peak August is far higher. On top of the weekly fee, budget for fuel, mooring and marina fees, end cleaning, and a refundable deposit or damage waiver. Because rates move so much by week, we quote per request — send your dates on WhatsApp.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat here?
Yes. For a bareboat you'll need a recognised sailing qualification (such as an ICC or equivalent national certificate) and ideally a VHF radio licence. French waters expect the skipper to be competent and to have a logged, experienced crew member aboard. If you don't hold the right paperwork or want to relax, hire one of our crewed boats or add a professional skipper. Ask us on WhatsApp and we'll confirm what your boat needs.
When is the best time to sail Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur?
Late May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, steadier weather and fewer boats than the July–August peak. High summer is hot and crowded but reliably sunny. The wind to watch year-round is the mistral, a strong northwesterly that can blow hard for a few days. Spring and autumn are quieter and often calmer, with a slightly higher chance of rain.
Where should I start my charter?
It depends which coast you want. Start at Marseille, Bandol or La Ciotat for the Calanques and the western shore. Start at Hyères for the Îles d'Hyères — Porquerolles and Port-Cros — which is the best week of cruising here. Start at Cannes, Antibes, Golfe-Juan or the Gulf of St-Tropez bases for the eastern marinas. We have boats at all of these; tell us your priorities and we'll suggest a base.
Is this coast good for families and first-time charterers?
Yes, with one caveat. The middle stretch — Bandol, La Ciotat, Toulon, Hyères and the islands — has short hops, sheltered anchorages and easy swimming, which suits families and newer crews well. The caveat is the mistral: don't plan a fixed schedule that forces you out in strong wind. Catamarans give more deck space and stable anchoring for kids. A professional skipper takes the pressure off if anyone's unsure.
What are the Îles d'Hyères and why sail there?
They're three islands off Hyères: Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Le Levant. Porquerolles has clear water, vineyards and a village; Port-Cros is a protected national park with a marked snorkel trail and buoy-only mooring. The sailing between them is short and the anchorages on the sheltered sides are calm in normal conditions. For many crews this archipelago is the highlight of the whole coast — worth building a week around.
Can I get there without flying?
Easily, if you're in Europe. The TGV runs from Paris to Marseille, Toulon, St-Raphaël and Cannes, putting you within a short transfer of most bases. Flying, use Marseille (MRS) for the west, Nice (NCE) for the east, and Toulon-Hyères (TLN) for the islands fleet. Transfers from airport or station to marina are usually under an hour. Send your arrival details on WhatsApp and we'll point you to the right base.
