Why sail the BVI

The British Virgin Islands are the easiest place in the Caribbean to sail your own boat. Most of the cruising happens inside the Sir Francis Drake Channel, a 20-mile stretch of protected water with islands either side. You can see your next anchorage from the one you're leaving. The trade winds are reliable, the water is warm year-round, and the distances are short — an hour or two under sail between stops, not a full day's passage.

That line-of-sight sailing is why the BVI carry more bareboat charters per square mile than anywhere else. You don't need to be a distance sailor. You need to read a chart, set an anchor, and pick up a mooring ball. We run 170 bareboat yachts here and not one crewed boat — this is a place people come to sail themselves.

British Virgin Islands questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in the BVI cost?
Cost depends on boat size, age and season. Catamarans cost more than monohulls, and high season (December to April) carries a clear premium over summer. On top of the boat fee, budget for provisioning, fuel, mooring balls (around EUR 30-40 a night), cruising permits, National Parks fees and cleaning. For an exact quote on a specific boat and week, message us on WhatsApp — Price on request.
Do I need a sailing licence to charter a bareboat in the BVI?
The BVI don't legally require a formal licence, but operators require a sailing CV showing relevant experience — typically time as skipper on a similar-sized boat. If your experience is thin, a hired captain can be arranged separately for the week or the first day. Tell us honestly what you've sailed and we'll match you to the right option.
When is the best time to sail the British Virgin Islands?
December to April is the prime season: drier air, steady 15-20 knot trades, warm water. Late December and January bring the stronger Christmas Winds. May and June are quieter and warmer with lighter air. Hurricane season runs June to November, with real risk August to October — sailable in the shoulders, but watch forecasts and check the storm policy.
Where do BVI charters start?
Our fleet is based on Tortola's south coast — Nanny Cay, Hodge's Creek and Ritter House marinas — all within easy reach of the Sir Francis Drake Channel. You'll do your boat briefing and provisioning there, then sail out into the Channel. Most first nights are spent at The Bight on Norman Island, an hour or so away.
Is the BVI good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes — it's one of the best places to learn to sail with kids. Short hops between anchorages, protected line-of-sight water, warm swimming, and reliable mooring balls keep things calm. Catamarans suit families for the deck space and stable platform at anchor. Pick a relaxed loop, skip the long Anegada leg if the kids are small, and plan early arrivals for moorings.
Monohull or catamaran for the BVI?
Catamarans dominate here: shallow draft for reef-fringed anchorages, room for groups, and steadiness at anchor — but they cost more and sail less close to the wind. Monohulls are cheaper and reward you if you genuinely want to sail between stops rather than motor. For two families sharing, a large catamaran usually wins on space and comfort.
How do I get to Tortola?
Most charterers fly into Beef Island (EIS) via San Juan, Puerto Rico, or connect through St Thomas or Antigua. From St Thomas you can ferry across to Tortola — bring passports, the BVI are a separate country with their own customs. Island connections run late often, so allow a buffer day before your charter starts rather than cutting it fine.
How many yachts can I charter in British Virgin Islands?
Right now there are 170 active yachts in British Virgin Islands, based out of BVI, Tortola, Ritter House Marina, BVI, Tortola, Nanny Cay Marina and BVI, Hodge's Creek Marina. The fleet list above is live from our operator system.
