Why sail Mahé

Mahé is granite, not coral rock. The Seychelles inner islands rise out of deep blue water as grey boulders draped in palm and takamaka, and the sailing between them is short-hop and forgiving. From Eden Island Marina you can be at anchor off a beach in under two hours. The water reads in bands — deep indigo, then jade, then a clear pale green over sand where you can watch your own shadow on the bottom in five metres.

This is not distance sailing. Passages between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue are half-day runs across the sheltered inner-island bank, where depths stay sensible and the sea rarely gets big. That makes it a good ground for first bareboaters and families who want beaches, snorkelling and easy nights at anchor rather than open ocean.

Mahé questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in Mahé cost?
It depends on the boat and the season. A 40–45ft bareboat catamaran runs from the low thousands of euros per week in quiet months, more in July and August, with larger and crewed yachts higher. On top of the boat, budget for fuel, marina and marine-park fees, provisioning and a deposit or damage waiver. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and crew for a firm figure — we quote per boat rather than guess.
Do I need a licence to charter bareboat in the Seychelles?
There's no single mandatory national licence, but to take a bareboat you'll need to show sailing experience — typically an ICC, RYA Day Skipper or equivalent, plus a sailing CV. A competent coastal skipper handles the inner islands comfortably given the short passages. If your paperwork is thin or you'd rather not skipper, take a crewed boat with a local skipper. Send us your certificates on WhatsApp and we'll confirm before you book.
When is the best time to sail Mahé?
May to September brings the south-east trades: steadier 15–25 knot wind, drier air and the cleaner sailing. December to March is the north-west monsoon — lighter, more variable wind, warm water and the odd heavy shower. April and October/November are hot and often glassy. There's no cyclone season here, so both monsoons work; pick your season for wind preference and choose your anchorage to the wind on the day.
Where do charters start from?
Nearly all Seychelles charters start from Eden Island Marina on the east coast of Mahé, a short drive from the international airport. It's the country's main marina and the practical base for provisioning before you head to the inner islands. From there Ste Anne marine park is minutes away and Praslin is a half-day sail north-east.
Is Mahé good for families and first-time charterers?
Yes. The inner islands sit close together with short, sheltered passages over a shallow bank, so you're rarely in big water and never far from a beach. Anchorages are sandy and calm, snorkelling is easy off the boat, and catamarans give the deck space families want. It suits first bareboaters and families well; it's less suited to anyone wanting long open-water passages.
How do I get to Mahé?
Fly into Seychelles International on Mahé, the country's only long-haul airport. Common connections run through Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi from Europe and the Gulf. A taxi from the airport to Eden Island Marina takes under 30 minutes. Provision on Mahé before you sail, as the outer islands are limited and pricier.
Bareboat or crewed — which should I choose?
Take a bareboat if you have coastal sailing experience and want to set your own pace; the navigation here is manageable for a competent skipper. Take a crewed boat if you'd rather not handle the yacht or the park paperwork, or want local knowledge of the best anchorages and snorkelling. A cook can be added to a crewed charter. Tell us your experience and preference on WhatsApp and we'll match the right boat.
How many yachts can I charter in Mahé?
Right now there are 51 active yachts in Mahé, based out of Seychelles, Mahe and Seychelles, Eden Island Marina. The fleet list above is live from our operator system.
